Golden Age Refacing's Post Installation Care

Cleaning Your Cabinets

To preserve the beauty and longevity of your cabinets, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential.

  • Avoid Abrasive Cleaners: Do not use abrasive scrubbers or cleaners like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, as they can remove the finish or scratch the surface.

  • Mild Cleaning Solution: Use a gentle dish soap with warm to hot water for routine cleaning. For laminate cabinets, a mild dish soap or vinegar solution works well.

  • Dry Immediately: After cleaning, wipe the surface with a dry cloth to prevent streaking or water damage.

  • Tougher Stains & Scuffs: For tougher marks, try an alcohol-based product such as methyl hydrate, available at hardware stores.

Heat & Steam Protection

Wood and laminate surfaces are susceptible to heat and moisture damage. To protect your cabinets:

  • Keep Appliances Away: Keep heat-producing appliances such as kettles, rice cookers, and slow cookers away from cabinets. If stored under upper cabinets, pull them onto the counter when in use and direct steam away.

  • Self-Cleaning Ovens: If using a self-cleaning oven function, crack open the nearby cabinet doors and drawers to allow heat to escape.

Removing & Reattaching Doors

Depending on your cabinet type, follow these steps:

  • European-Style Cabinets: Locate the clip on the back of the hinge and press to release. To reattach, align the clips and slide them into place until you hear a click.

  • Face Frame Cabinets: Locate the screw at the center-back of the hinge. To remove or reattach, loosen or tighten the screw while leaving the hinge plate attached.

Removing & Reattaching Drawers

  • To Remove: Locate the clips on the underside of the drawer, unclip, then slide the drawer forward and lift it off the glides.

  • To Reattach: Extend the drawer glides fully, rest the drawer back onto the glides, and close the drawer completely. Reopen to ensure the glides have clicked into place.

  • Adjustments:

    • The rolling wheel adjusts the drawer left or right.

    • The shim slider adjusts the drawer up or down.

Adjusting Concealed Hinges

If your cabinet doors shift over time, you may need to adjust the hinges:

  • Locate Adjustment Screws: Open the door to expose the hinge and find the adjustment screws on the hinge plate.

  • Vertical Adjustment: To raise or lower the door, turn the vertical adjustment screw clockwise (up) or counterclockwise (down).

  • Horizontal Adjustment: If doors have gaps, turn the horizontal adjustment screw to shift them left or right.

  • Test the Door: Close and check alignment, making further adjustments if needed.

Preventative Care

  • Protect from Moisture: Avoid prolonged water exposure. Wipe up spills immediately to prevent swelling or warping.

  • Use Cabinet Liners: Protect shelves and interiors from spills and scratches with cabinet liners.

  • Inspect for Damage: Regularly check for peeling edges, scratches, or misaligned doors and make adjustments as needed.

  • Repair Minor Damage: Use fill stick crayons to fix minor chips or scratches.
